I'm a bit indifferent on the monitoring stuff. I've been around for years and
have learned to rely on my own scripts. However, I have had to work with most of
the 3rd party products too. Some are pathetic. Most are expensive. Much of the
performance "intelligence" is not. The factors that differentiate the products
are (1) price (2) hidden setup effort (3) GUI (4) flexibility (5) intrusion
overhead - in that order. If you need an enterprise solution then scalability
should be high on that list too, and the maturity and potential longevity of the
product should be too. All things considered, I think it is prudent for most
companies to buy and use such a product.
