Asking a Question

Basic and non-performance questions

Please note that due to the volume of questions being asked, and the limited time that we have available, we can only answer questions of general interest on internals and advanced performance tuning. If your question does not fit into that category then please direct your question to one of the following forums instead:

comp.databases.oracle.server This is the Usenet newsgroup for Oracle database server discussions. It is frequented by some highly respected Oracle experts including Jonathan Lewis and Thomas Kyte, and it is even graced occasionally by some senior Oracle Server Technology developers such as Anjo Kolk. On the other hand there are some would-be experts here who are more anxious to parade their knowledge than to be helpful. Nevertheless, this is generally the best forum in which to ask questions about how to employ the newer features of Oracle. If you don't have a newsreader or access to a news feed, this newsgroup can be accessed via the web at mailgate.org, dbforums.com or groups.google.com.
oracle-l@fatcity.com Although this is a general Oracle mailing list, the focus tends to be on operational issues rather than development ones. The list membership includes some senior DBAs with extensive experience who give generously of their time and expertise to help others. This list has a strong community ethos of mutual respect and acceptance, and is largely free of arrogance and acerbity. To subscribe, send an email to listguru@fatcity.com with the words SUBSCRIBE ORACLE-L in the message body.
Oracle MetaLink Oracle customers with a current support contract can ask questions via the MetaLink discussion forums. The Oracle analysts hosting these forums are well trained and have access to extensive internal resources, so the quality of answers is very high. However, they have less expertise on advanced performance tuning than on other matters.

Advanced performance tuning questions

If you have exhausted all other avenues and still have an unanswered question of general interest on internals or advanced performance tuning, then please email questions@ixora.com.au. Most questions are answered within two weeks, unless we are too busy. Unanswered questions older than one month old are deleted as stale, and should be resubmitted if the issue is still current.

Please do not regard this service as a free substitute for our consulting services.
